Following a series of project challenges, phase one of the £135m Copr Bay scheme is becoming a reality.
Maple Façades is making significant progress with the installation of over 2,000 twisted fins for Swansea Central car park, which forms part of phase one of the £135m Copr Bay scheme alongside an arena, a 1.1-acre coastal park and a new apartment block. Each fin has been precisely twisted to various degrees to create a sense of movement across the façade, similar to our work for Victoria Gate in 2016.
A key element of the façade is the use of Maple’s innovative spring-loaded bracket system, designed to keep each aluminium fin perfectly aligned while allowing for structural movement and load variations common to car parks.
To learn the backstory behind the award-winning fins, take a look at the Victoria Gate car park’s pre-construction story.
With many of the fins now in place, the dramatic wave effect envisioned by AFL Architects is beginning to take shape. The deep metallic pink powder-coated finish brings a colourful, contemporary character to the building and will complement the modern style of Swansea’s wider regeneration plans.

Given the car park’s seaside location, careful considerations have been made about the coating specifications of the fins. Due to the high salt exposure in coastal conditions, aluminium is typically powder-coated to a thickness of up to 80 microns to ensure long-term protection against corrosion. For more details on corrosion categories, see our Knowledge Centre article, 'What are the corrosion categories and how can this affect your project?'.
Swansea Central marks another example of Maple’s delivery of technically challenging architectural façades at scale and we look forward to seeing the finished result.
