H&M put Maple’s architectural façade skills in the shop window

Maple have supplied and installed 700 square metres of architectural panels to a new H&M store in Liverpool.

The aluminium panels cloak three floors of shop frontage like a giant piece of pleated material ― just as the architect envisaged. However, Maple started the project with no more than the architect’s vision, and some relatively basic drawings.

We had to design and manufacture 60 perforated panels (all more than 4m high) and devise a technique of folding them into unique pleated profiles. We then had to design ‘stiffeners’ to prevent the panels from flexing when installed.

The challenges didn’t stop there. The store is located on a Lord Street, a busy pedestrian precinct in the city centre, so we had to install the panels outside normal shopping hours ― to a very exacting time schedule, with restricted access for vehicles and lifting equipment.
