One of Maple’s most striking projects has been shortlisted for a RIBA Yorkshire Award.

The Barbara Hepworth Building at the University of Huddersfield is among 11 buildings in the running.

Described as a ‘bold move’ by the judges, the innovative design includes architectural façade panels on three elevations. They were envisioned by architects AHR, and created and installed by Maple.

Laser-cut with a design to represent the branches of a tree, the panels will not only shade occupants from direct sun, they will also help tell the story of the regeneration of the building’s former industrial site.

It’s overdue recognition for the university’s School of Art, Design and Architecture – after another Maple, AHR and Morgan Sindall collaboration grabbed the headlines on campus.

Previously, the Oastler Building, recognised for its ‘hockey stick’ vertical fins, was a winner in the Education category at the 2017 LABC Building Excellence Awards, and was shortlisted for a RIBA Yorkshire Award in 2018.
