More than 3,500 square metres of façade panels protect travellers from wind and rain in a new car park at Milton Keynes Central Station.

Round, laser-cut perforations let in light and ventilation to car park decks, while solid and mesh panels complete a design that is both practical and visually striking.

However, it was the eight-week installation programme of this architectural façade that is perhaps the most impressive. This was achieved by close collaboration between car park construction experts Goldbeck Gmbh and Maple’s technical design team from Day One, and by a value engineering process that streamlined the design, reduced manufacturing cost and made installation easier.

The 1,300-panel façade is made up of a limited number of standard sizes ― avoiding complex manufacture of multiple components – and was powder-coated to protect the aluminium, and match the architect’s vision.

“The façade definitely met the design (brief); maybe even more. The client was impressed and so were we,” said Goldbeck project manager Stanislav Stanchev. “But apart from the finished product, I was most impressed with the Maple teams onsite. Communication was good too; everything I needed was answered very quickly.”

The Milton Keynes project was the most recent in our expanding portfolio of collaborations with Goldbeck, and brought together their car park experience and Maple’s specific expertise in architectural façades. However, it also aligned the two firms’ core values of openness, respect and social responsibility.

“We’re both second-generation family firms and have a very similar mindset,” said Maple director Sean McGrath. “We both obviously have a lot of experience in our sector, and in car park construction in particular, but we also put people first – supporting our own employees and working closely with others to deliver great outcomes.

“The relationship we have with Goldbeck, and the respect and understanding we have for each other’s operations, means we were able to complete the project ahead of schedule,” said Sean.

The new car park will meet the increased demand for car park spaces created by the region’s expanding rail services.
