The multi-storey comprises nearly 1,900 aluminium panels and living walls.

Riverside Sunderland multi-storey car park marked Maple Façades's latest project with car park specialist Goldbeck who were sub-contracted by Sir Robert McAlpine, another of Maple’s regular collaborators.

The project involved the installation of nearly two thousand perforated panels which cover an area of 3,800 sqm and create the impression of waves across the Sunderland skyline. The car park was designed by architects Tonkin Liu and uses controlled illumination to create a bright urban landmark during the day and night.

Viritopia were also involved in the innovative development by delivering a striking living wall.

Each panel has been anodised silver to help the perforated waves blend seamlessly with the car park's coastal location. Furthermore, the anodising process also provides the panels with a layer of protection against corrosive salty air. Since its completion in summer 2023, the 650-space car park has won a range of accolades, such as ‘Best New Car Park’ at the British Parking Awards. The development was recognised for ‘outstanding design and construction techniques that turn car parks into landmark structures.’
