The Olympic Games have been postponed – but Maple have sprinted to a personal best this summer.

We’ve manufactured and installed vertical brise soleil fins at the Durham Station car park extension in just six weeks. That’s including an innovative heat-transfer process to give the aluminium fins a wood-effect finish.

“The project is quite possibly one of the fastest turnaround car parks we’ve done,” said Maple’s Operations Manager, Kelly Dunbar. “Drawings were issued for the fabrication of the fins on 29 June, we started installation on 27 July, and we were finished onsite by the target date of 12 August.”

Network Rail and the contracting team from Buckingham Group worked to minimise disruption to car park users while the 135-space extension was being built. So, Maple had a small time slot to install the vertical fins, which are largely aesthetic but (at 150mm centres) provide some protection from wind and rain, as well as having a safety function.

With timings so tight, Maple used a flexible, freelance design resource as well as strategic supply-chain partners. One of them, Decoral Systems, was commissioned to apply innovative wood-effect, heat-transfer graphics to the powder-coated aluminium.
