We’re about to start our latest project at Brighton College, a leading boarding and day school on the south coast.

The work will be carried out on the new four-storey Sports & Science Centre, and will involve the supply and installation of internal blinds and shading systems.

It’s our second project at Brighton College – in 2017, we designed and installed a brise soleil system for the main building to control solar glare and heat to classrooms and breakout areas. We also supplied more than 200 venetian blinds. This time, the blinds are bigger and more technically advanced.

In total, 106 separate electrically controlled blinds will be installed throughout the building, including huge blinds in the main sports hall. Here, the bespoke blinds, with 8.5m drops, will be fixed to the structural steelwork of the building.

The size of the project and the complexity of the requirements emphasised the need for client engagement – a key part of Maple’s Diamond Route approach. We created a mock-up area onsite for architects OMA, contractors McLaren and the client to view and approve our designs.

The new building will include a swimming pool in the basement along with underground parking for the college fleet of minibuses. The ground floor has a café, sports viewing area, gymnasium and sports hall as well as an indoor sprint track. Upper floors will hold laboratories for all core sciences, while rooftop amenity space will feature a running track.
