Giant vertical fins in golden yellow will be the standout feature of a new sports centre development in Nottingham.
The 1,200mm wide fins are between 5m and 6.5m high, and will protect centre users from the glare of the evening sun.
Unlike horizontal brise soleil systems, which provide shade when the sun’s at its highest, vertical fins are an effective barrier to low-level sun on east and west elevations.
At the new Bingham Arena and Enterprise Centre, the 10 bespoke fins – the brainchild of Nottingham-based architects YMD Boon - will be both functional and aesthetic. Fabricated from perforated aluminium to look good and keep the weight down, they will be curved for rigidity and fitted with hidden stiffeners.
The fins are just one part of a varied project for Maple.
We’re also installing brise soleil for the south elevation, and creating a louvred plant screen for the roof.
The project is being delivered by Willmott Dixon on behalf of Rushcliffe Borough Council. When complete, the two-storey arena and enterprise Centre will feature two swimming pools, a fitness gym, workout studios, and adjacent community hall with staging and seating. The new facility will also include a commercial office block, specifically designed to support local start-up businesses.
