Maple to install bespoke Brise Soleil to new Heartlands Hospital

Maple are part of an exciting new masterplan to transform healthcare facilities at Birmingham’s Heartlands Hospital.

We’re working with Kier Construction on the new £97m Ambulatory Care and Diagnostic Centre, which will provide outpatient services, endoscopy, day-case surgery and imaging services for 1,500 patients a day.

The four-storey building will provide a modern environment for patients and staff, with large areas of glazing providing natural light and a sense of space. However, with extensive glazing comes challenges, so to combat glare and overheating caused by direct sunlight, Maple are supplying and installing a bespoke brise soleil system to the south-facing elevation. The horizontal blades will allow light to enter the hospital building but provide shade when the sun’s at its highest point.

Conditions don’t just need to be right for patients and staff. At roof level, we’re using our bespoke ventilation louvre system to protect important plant and machinery from the elements while controlling the airflow it needs.

Although work is not due to start until later in 2021, Maple are already working closely with Kier and the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust to ensure the hospital’s vital services are unaffected during construction. As well as controlling noise, dust and vibration, Maple will also work to meet the wider objectives of the NHS Sustainability Transformation Plan.
